Ricco was born and raised in Spokane, Washington. He was educated in fine arts at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design in Denver, Colorado and Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington. He worked as a graphic designer, illustrator and art director before finding his place as a professional painter. He now lives on an organic vegetable farm that he shares with his wife and two children in picturesque Hobart Washington just outside of Seattle.
He was a founding member of the artEAST art center in Issaquah, Washington. The center is home to a gallery and educational center that boasts a membership of well over 200 northwest artists and craftspeople.
Ricco’s paintings have been available at galleries in Laguna Beach and Palm Desert, California, Boston MA, Seattle, Bellevue, La Conner and Spokane, Washington, Sun Valley, Coeur d'Alene and McCall, Idaho, and Lancaster, Wisconsin. He has had numerous one-man and group shows. His paintings are included in many private and public collections.
I’d like my paintings to take collectors to another place, and even another time. The act of painting gives me the opportunity to interpret deep emotions and strong memories of valuable moments in my life. Drawing on my love of traveling, my works, painted from memory, are not literal views, but idyllic windows to a specific feeling. My work often takes into account the ambient sounds that color a moment, as well as the visual. I intend for collectors to be reminded of specific times in their own lives. It’s important that there is a feeling of movement or animation in my paintings. The use of shadows allows me to do just that, as the shadow represents a fleeting moment in time. The shadow figures are not intended to be a literal image, but rather a reflection or the shadow of one’s spirit.
My passion is to take moments that happen in my mind and share them with the world. In doing so, I hope to provoke thought or inspiration, or just a momentary escape for the viewer. I feel stronger than ever that – as William Shakespeare wrote in Macbeth – “Life’s but a walking shadow.” We can only experience life, moments at a time. We cannot control time, and it stops for no one. As an artist, I try to leave my personal stamp on this temporary world. Hopefully giving something beautiful as a gift for those who follow.
